The potential of embedded systems ranges from the simplicity of sharing digital media to the coordination of a variety of complex joint actions carried out between collections of networked devices. The book explores the emerging use of embedded systems and wireless technologies from theoretical and practical applications and their applications in agriculture, environment, public health, domotics, and public transportation, among others.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third IFIP-TC6 Networking Conference, NETWORKING 2004, held in Athens, Greece, in May 2004.

The 103 revised full papers and 40 revised short papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 539 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on network security; TCP performance; ad-hoc networks; wavelength management; multicast; wireless network performance; inter-domain routing; packet classification and scheduling; services and monitoring; admission control; competition in networks; 3G/4G wireless systems; MPLS and related technologies; flow and congestion control; performance of IEEE 802.11; optical networks; TCP and congestion; key management; authentication and DOS prevention; energy aspects of wireless networks; optical network access; routing in ad-hoc networks; fault detection, restoration, and tolerance; QoS metrics, algorithms, and architecture; content distribution, caching, and replication; and routing theory and path computation.

Sensor networks have many interesting applications with great utility; however, their actually deployment and realization rely on continuous innovations and solutions to many challenging problems. Thus, sensor networks have recently attracted the attention of many researchers and practitioners. The compilation of the Handbook on Sensor Networks will meet the demand of the sensor network community for a comprehensive reference and summary of the current state of the area.

The Handbook on Sensor Networks is a collection of approximately 40 chapters on sensor network theory and applications. The book spans a wide spectrum and includes topics in medium access control, routing, security and privacy, coverage and connectivity, modeling and simulations, multimedia, energy efficiency, localization and tracking, design and implementation, as well as sensor network applications.

Access control is one of the fundamental services that any Data Management System should provide. Its main goal is to protect data from unauthorized read and write operations. This is particularly crucial in today's open and interconnected world, where each kind of information can be easily made available to a huge user population, and where a damage or misuse of data may have unpredictable consequences that go beyond the boundaries where data reside or have been generated. This book provides an overview of the various developments in access control for data management systems. Discretionary, mandatory, and role-based access control will be discussed, by surveying the most relevant proposals and analyzing the benefits and drawbacks of each paradigm in view of the requirements of different application domains. Access control mechanisms provided by commercial Data Management Systems are presented and discussed. Finally, the last part of the book is devoted to discussion of some of the most challenging and innovative research trends in the area of access control, such as those related to the Web 2.0 revolution or to the Database as a Service paradigm. This book is a valuable reference for an heterogeneous audience. It can be used as either an extended survey for people who are interested in access control or as a reference book for senior undergraduate or graduate courses in data security with a special focus on access control. It is also useful for technologists, researchers, managers, and developers who want to know more about access control and related emerging trends.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th International Joint Conference CAAP/FASE on Theory and Practice of Software Development (TAPSOFT'97), held in Lille, France, in April 1997. The volume is organized in three parts: The first presents invited contributions, the second is devoted to trees in algebra in programming (CAAP) and the third to formal approaches in software engineering (FASE). The 30 revised full papers presented in the CAAP section were selected from 77 submissions; the 23 revised full papers presented in the FASE section were selected from 79 submissions.
This book contains the final reports of 19 workshops held during the 20th European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming, ECOOP 2006, held in Nantes, France in July 2006. The 19 reports cover the entire range of object technology and related topics, presenting a coherent and highly representative snapshot of the major trends in the field.

As a usability specialist or interaction designer working with the government, or as a government or contractor professional involved in specifying, procuring, or managing system development, you need this book. Editors Elizabeth Buie and Dianne Murray have brought together over 30 experts to outline practical advice to both usability specialists and government technology professionals and managers.

Working with internal and external government systems is a unique and difficult task because of of the sheer magnitude of the audience for external systems (the entire population of a country, and sometimes more), and because of the need to achieve government transparency while protecting citizens’ privacy.. Open government, plain language, accessibility, biometrics, service design, internal vs. external systems, and cross-cultural issues, as well as working with the government, are all covered in this book.

  • Covers both public-facing systems and internal systems run by governments
  • Details usability and user experience approaches specific to government websites, intranets, complex systems, and applications
  • Provides practical material that allows you to take the information and immediately use it to make a difference in your projects
