The American architect Louis Kahn is one of the great master builders of the twentieth century. With complex spatial compositions, an elemental formal vocabulary and a choreographic mastery of light, Kahn created buildings of powerful archaic beauty. Among his most important works are the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California (1959-65), the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas (1966-72) and the National Assembly Building in Dhaka, Bangladesh (1962-83). Louis Kahn: The Power of Architecture is the first comprehensive publication on this architect in 20 years, and presents all of his important projects. Essays by prominent Kahn experts discuss the sources, contexts and influences of his work; among the authors are such renowned art and architectural historians as Stanislaus von Moos, William J. R. Curtis, Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen and Neil Levine. Topics discussed include Kahn's pioneering role in concrete construction; the visionary plans for his home city of Philadelphia; his years at Yale University; his dialogue with Josef Albers; and his importance for modern architecture in Southeast Asia. An illustrated biography provides new facts and insights about Kahn's life and work. In interviews, leading architects such as Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano, Peter Zumthor and Sou Fujimoto explain Kahn's significance in today's architectural discourse. An extensive catalogue of works features original drawings and architectural models from the Kahn archive, many of which are presented with high-quality images for the first time. The book is further augmented by a portfolio of Kahn's travel drawings as well as photographs by Thomas Florschuetz, which offer completely new views of the Salk Institute and the Indian Institute of Management. Born in Estonia, Louis Kahn (1901-1974) emigrated to the U.S. with his family in 1906. After studying at the University of Pennsylvania, and working for several architecture firms in Philadelphia, Kahn founded his own atelier in 1935. From 1947 to 1957, Kahn served as a design critic and professor at the Yale School of Architecture, and later as professor of architecture at the School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania. Synergizing herbal medicine with clinical science, this two-volume guide combines the medicinal applications of a comprehensive range of herbs from traditional Chinese medicine with modern day scientific information. In a rapid access, A-Z format, this ready reference contains more than 300 chemical structures of active ingredients, supported by chemical, pharmacological and toxicological data, and backed by some 8,000 literature citations. With its listing of the complete Materia Medica of plant origin from the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, this work is highly relevant to experimental practitioners in the medicinal and pharmaceutical fields and the only one to provide such a wealth of chemical data. Sunburst clocks, swag-leg armchairs: the designs of George Nelson have come to define the mid-century modern aesthetic. In honor of Nelson's 100th birthday comes this exhibition catalogue for the first comprehensive retrospective of the work of the designer, one of the most influential figures in American design during the second half of the twentieth century. Full color, extensively illustrated, this book from the Vitra Design Museum is a fitting tribute to this seminal figure. With eight essays by German and American design historians, the publication deals with all of the areas in Nelson's oeuvre, many of which are presented here for the first time. The majority of illustrations, previously unpublished, come from the Nelson Estate in the Vitra Design Museum Archive. Over the past century, no means of transportation has been so profoundly developed and transformed as the aeroplane. Within a mere eight decades--since the first regular airline flights in 1919--flying has gone from being the adventurous, exclusive pleasure of a select few to a mass phenomenon. Civilian air travel has not only created its own technical standards, but also produced its own aesthetic: cabin interiors, airport architecture, airline corporate design, flight attendant uniforms, and tableware. With many illustrations and archival materials that have never before been presented to the public, this book is dedicated to this 'airworld' and the designers, architects, graphic artists and fashion designers that created it. Nine richly illustrated essays explore the history of air travel from the perspective of design and architectural history, thus offering a unique source for those interested in design as well as those with a passion for the history of air travel. As Andy Warhol put it: "Airplanes and airports have my favorite kind of food service, my favorite kinds of entertainment, my favorite graphics and colors, the best security checks, the best views, the best employees and the best optimism." How will new technologies change residential architecture in the near future? The miniaturization of processors, the wireless transmittal of data and refined sensor technologies are opening up new possibilities for Intelligent Houses. Yet many basic questions about these developments for the way we live have been left not addressed by research and showcase homes. For the exhibition on which this richly illustrated catalog is based the Vitra Design Museum and Art Center College of Design in Pasadena invited twelve emerging architectural firms to develop visionary answers to this question. The architects are based in the USA, Mexico, England, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Korea, Japan and Australia. Their projects include room installations, models, photos and films. Perceptive essays add depth; among them, curator Susanne Jaschko puts the designs in the context of general trends in contemporary architecture, Beatriz Colomina comments on past visions of the future home, and Dana Hutt interviews renowned international architects on Future Living. Also includes data on demographic and technical developments which will shape future living environments and a mini encyclopedia of important technologies. Providing the scientific background on the risk and safety assessment of toxicity in phytochemicals in everyday food, this monograph contains the pros and cons of 20 testing methods, with comments by the internationally acknowledged and independent DFG Senate Commission on Food Safety. Supplemented by 40 poster contributions on phytochemicals and their effects. Universitat Kaiserlautern, Germany.
