This book describes a number of the more important improvements in risk assessment methodology in the nuclear industry, developed over the last decade. It presents them in an instructive way so as to be suitable for those wishing to understand the techniques. The methodology of modern probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) is discussed in detail. This book is divided into six parts. Part I, Protecting the Public Health and Safety provides an overview of risk analysis including results presentation, safety goals, emergency planning, and public perception. Part II, the Mathematics, which is necessary to understand the text. Part III, safety Aspects of Light Water Reactors describes the types of plants and goes on to discuss accident initiator selection and frequencies. Part IV, PRA, describes system modelling, human factors analysis, data bases, codes, system interactions, external events, core melt physics, and the transport of radionuclides to the public. Part V discusses 34 types of applications of PRA. Part VI, Resources, provides a glossary, references, and an index. Problems are provided at the end of each part to both stimulate understanding and introduce additional material. This book would be a very valuable addition to the reference library of practitioners in the risk assessment business. It is also a useful instructional text for graduate and undergraduate nuclear engineering students as well as newcomers to the field.
The importance of power system reliability is demonstrated when our electricity supply is disrupted, whether it decreases the comfort of our free time at home or causes the shutdown of our companies and results in huge economic deficits. The objective of Assessment of Power System Reliability is to contribute to the improvement of power system reliability. It consists of six parts divided into twenty chapters. The first part introduces the important background issues that affect power system reliability. The second part presents the reliability methods that are used for analyses of technical systems and processes. The third part discusses power flow analysis methods, because the dynamic aspect of a power system is an important part of related reliability assessments. The fourth part explores various aspects of the reliability assessment of power systems and their parts. The fifth part covers optimization methods. The sixth part looks at the application of reliability and optimization methods. Assessment of Power System Reliability has been written in straightforward language that continues into the mathematical representation of the methods. Power engineers and developers will appreciate the emphasis on practical usage, while researchers and advanced students will benefit from the simple examples that can facilitate their understanding of the theory behind power system reliability and that outline the procedure for application of the presented methods.

From the author: In this short paper, we summarize the real options approach and show how it can be used to introduce flexibility into the capital budgeting process. We then go on to show an application of real option evaluation to research and development valuation in the pharmaceutical industry. Our calculations and illustrations are in Excel and can be easily replicated.

Europe witnessed in the last years a number of significant power contingencies. Some of them revealed the potentiality of vast impact on the welfare of society and triggered pressing questions on the reliability of electric power systems. Society has incorporated electricity as an inherent component, indispensable for achieving the expected level of quality of life. Therefore, any impingement on the continuity of the electricity service would be able to distress society as a whole, affecting individuals, social and economic activities, other infrastructures and essential government functions. It would be possible to hypothesize that in extreme situations this could even upset national security.

This book explores the potential risks and vulnerabilities of the European electricity infrastructure, other infrastructures and our society as whole increasingly depend on. The work was initiated by the need to verify the potential effects of the ongoing market and technical transformation of the infrastructure, which is fundamentally changing its operation and performance. The final aim is to set the basis for an appropriate industrial and political European-wide response to the risk challenges.
