By the winner of the 1988 Nobel Prize in Economics, an essential and paradigm-altering framework for understanding economic development--for both rich and poor--in the twenty-first century. Freedom, Sen argues, is both the end and most efficient means of sustaining economic life and the key to securing the general welfare of the world's entire population. Releasing the idea of individual freedom from association with any particular historical, intellectual, political, or religious tradition, Sen clearly demonstrates its current applicability and possibilities. In the new global economy, where, despite unprecedented increases in overall opulence, the contemporary world denies elementary freedoms to vast numbers--perhaps even the majority of people--he concludes, it is still possible to practically and optimistically restain a sense of social accountability. Development as Freedom is essential reading. Social justice: an ideal, forever beyond our grasp; or one of many practical possibilities? More than a matter of intellectual discourse, the idea of justice plays a real role in how—and how well—people live. And in this book the distinguished scholar Amartya Sen offers a powerful critique of the theory of social justice that, in its grip on social and political thinking, has long left practical realities far behind. The transcendental theory of justice, the subject of Sen’s analysis, flourished in the Enlightenment and has proponents among some of the most distinguished philosophers of our day; it is concerned with identifying perfectly just social arrangements, defining the nature of the perfectly just society. The approach Sen favors, on the other hand, focuses on the comparative judgments of what is “more” or “less” just, and on the comparative merits of the different societies that actually emerge from certain institutions and social interactions. At the heart of Sen’s argument is a respect for reasoned differences in our understanding of what a “just society” really is. People of different persuasions—for example, utilitarians, economic egalitarians, labor right theorists, no-nonsense libertarians—might each reasonably see a clear and straightforward resolution to questions of justice; and yet, these clear and straightforward resolutions would be completely different. In light of this, Sen argues for a comparative perspective on justice that can guide us in the choice between alternatives that we inevitably face. NOVEL / SHORT STORIES
AFSANEY AMARTA PREETAM
TERTEEB NAU: M.SERWER The conception of nama-rupa, "name-and-form," is that of the complex of worldly reality, i.e., differentiated contingent existence, both individual and cosmic. It pertains to the differentiation of the original infinite unity. The related term dharma-rupa presents the same conception, but expresses the contrast between the original unity and its differentiation. This book is a scholarly study of this conception, showing how it pervades Indian thought from the Hindu Vedas to the Buddhist Suttas. By way of the all-pervasive Yoga tradition it emerges and re-emerges in various forms in the different systems. This book includes material on the idea of "pre-canonical Buddhism" pioneered by Stanislaw Schayer. TRIBES AND CITIZENSHIP IN THE UNITED STATES proposes a new direction for U.S. tribal policy. Drawing on three decades of involvement in tribal litigation, Francis G. Hutchins outlines future options for once-sovereign tribes whose members are now U.S. citizens. An earlier book by Hutchins, TRIBES AND THE AMERICAN CONSTITUTION, was praised as a masterful history. His new book applies history to citizenship dilemmas resulting from the divided loyalties felt by members of present-day tribes, and argues for a return to an updated version of the pro-equality tribal policy basic to the 1789 Constitution. TRIBES AND CITIZENSHIP describes how legal equality for members of tribes was advocated by the Seneca chief Red Jacket and promoted by George Washington, but then undermined by Thomas Jefferson, abandoned by Andrew Jackson, destroyed by Theodore Roosevelt and finally replaced in the 1930s with a segregationist policy based on Indian blood that violates the Constitution. The remedy, argues Hutchins, is to reaffirm the Constitution s goal by working toward equal citizenship for members of tribes incorporated under U.S. law. This book provides a critical overview of U.S. tribal policy from 1775 to 1840, and offers suggestions for future U.S. tribal policy based on early American precedents. Strongly opposes existing federal law and current historical scholarship and should be quite controversial. Discusses the tribal views of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson and U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall. Proposes that existing tribal reservations be made into the 51st state. Here are India's classic Animal Fables in an exciting new translation.
