Indonesian organizations today increasingly demand rigorous qualifications from the PR practitioners. However, old misperceptions about PR being a glamorous job that does not require much intelligence still exist. Consequently, physical attractiveness and youth are often regarded as requirements more important than education and experience for PR practitioners. Moreover, many Indonesian organizations still limit the public relations practitioner?s role to that of a technician, and only in times of crisis would these organizations seek strategic public relations. This book explains the history of PR in Indonesia and analyzes its status and the various perceptions Indonesians have toward the field. This study used quantitative online surveys as well as qualitative online and face-to-face interviews as research methods. Although based on the author?s Master?s thesis in 2003, this book contains valuable information that is still accurate today and will be useful to PR practitioners and scholars in Indonesia and worldwide.

In 1998, Indonesia's military government collapsed, creating a crisis that many believed would derail its democratic transition. Yet the world's most populous Muslim country continues to receive high marks from democracy-ranking organizations. In this volume, political scientists, religious scholars, legal theorists, and anthropologists examine Indonesia's transition compared to Chile, Spain, India, and potentially Tunisia, and democratic failures in Yugoslavia, Egypt, and Iran. Chapters explore religion and politics and Muslims' support for democracy before change.

Public relations is often regarded as a female field. In Indonesia, women have entered PR in conventionally male-dominated fields. Women predominate in its teaching, and many are setting up their own agencies. In Indonesia, PR is a developing field where it seems that gender equity has become a reality. But has it really? This book analyzes the impacts of the feminization of PR, and whether this is benefiting women practitioners and the overall industry in Indonesia. Based on in-depth interviews with 53 PR practitioners and educators in Jakarta, and a mailing list discussion, this book analyzes factors of the glass ceiling and role congruity theories from radical feminist and liberal feminist perspectives. This analysis helps build a feminist theory of PR by demonstrating the importance of the organizational environment to the influence of PR practitioners, both male and female. On a practical level, this book went beyond the simple claim that gender discrepancies exist, and instead gave explanations and potential solutions to problems. Feminist communication scholars, PR practitioners and students will find this book especially useful.
Illustrated by a detailed comparative examination of mining regulations and environmental impact assessment (EIA) in the USA (the second largest producer of coal in the world) and Indonesia (the eighth largest and most rapidly growing), this book argues that the degree of policy integration often determines the success or failure in controlling environmental effects of mining operations. Comparison of surface mining regulation in the two countries provides some stark contrasts, some surprising results concerning the diffusion of policy innovations from one country to another, and instances of both policy success and failure. The book provides significant new insights into international relations and comparative environmental policy, particularly as they affect rainforests and biodiversity. It also suggests that if mining environmental policy were to be effectively implemented, the environmental degradation caused need not be permanent.
Indonesia is currently facing some severe challenges, both in political affairs and in economic management. One of these challenges is the recently enacted decentralization program, now well underway, which promises to have some wide-ranging consequences. This edited volume presents original papers, written by a select group of widely recognized and distinguished scholars, that take a hard, objective look at the many effects of decentralization on economic and political issues in Indonesia. There are many questions about this program: how will it be implemented, is there capacity at the local level to implement its reforms, is there sufficient local political accountability to make it work, and how will the decentralization affect the broader program of economic growth and stabilization? Topics covered include: the historical and political dimensions of decentralization, its macroeconomic effects, its effects on poverty alleviation, the assignment of expenditure and revenue functions across levels of government, the design of transfers, the role of natural resource taxation and the effects of local government borrowing. An authoritative, comprehensive collection, Reforming Intergovernmental Fiscal Relations and the Rebuilding of Indonesia will be of interest to economists and policy makers as well as students of public finance, development, and Asian economics.
